Admit it. You pay attention to celebrity happenings as much as anyone else. Who knows why, but we all seem drawn to famous people, their loves and lives. In most cases, it’s kind of like watching a fire or a train wreck. You know it really isn’t in good taste to watch as celebrities marry, only to run out and hire divorce lawyers a year later, but you can’t help it.

So, without further ado, here is our list of 2010 train wrecks (by “train wrecks”, we mean divorces, in case you didn’t catch that):

• LeAnn Rimes and Dean Sheremet. They started dating in 2001 and tied the knot in 2002. Their divorce became final in June this year. All we can say is C’mon, Dean what were you thinking letting this one get away? I mean, she’s cute, she sings like an angel, and she has to be the biggest sugar-mamma this side of the Mississippi. Of course, the fact that she was sleeping with another dude might have had something to do with it.
• Shania Twain and Mutt Lange. What do you get when you cross a rock and roll legend and a Canadian country singer? Apparently, one kid and a nasty divorce.  Mutt Lange produced some of rock’s greatest bands, including Def Leppard and AC/DC. So what in the world was he doing hooked up with a goat roper anyway? We realize she’s hot (OK, more like smokin’), but still.
• Jesse James and Sandra Bullock. Perhaps the most publicized split of the year, tattoes TV bad boy Jesse James was kicked to the curb by Oscar winning beauty Sandra Bullock. Apparently, Bullock isn’t the first Best Actress winner to suffer a divorce shortly after her award. At least four other recent Best Actress winners also called divorce lawyers after winning their Oscars.
• Kelsey and Camille Grammer. The divorce isn’t final yet, but it should be before the year is out. Apparently, Kelsey, who starred in Cheers and Fraser pushed the mother of his two children into auditioning and getting a part in The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills so he could get a little extracurricular action while she was at work.
• Billy Ray and Tish Cyrus. Don’t tell his achy breaky heart, but Billy Ray will be single again, soon as he and wife Tish call it quits after 17 years. As for Miley, we’re guessing that she doesn’t think this is the Best of Both Worlds.
• David Arquette and Courtney Cox. In what is quite likely the most pathetic divorce of the year, Arquette admitted to Howard Stern (of all people) that he cries when having sex with other women now. Really, David? You cry? Either quit sleeping around or grow a pair, dude.

Going through a divorce can wreak havoc in all areas of life, including your finances and credit. While you may have other primary concerns, such as who will get custody of the children and how parental time will be split up, your life after the divorce will be greatly affected by how you handle your finances. Protecting your credit during and after your divorce should be a top priority.

1. Request a copy of your credit report. You need to know about all accounts that have you listed as a borrower, especially when you weren’t responsible for family finances. Make a list of all accounts, including amounts owed, and work with your divorce lawyers to determine who should be financially responsible.
2. Close all joint accounts. After deciding who should be responsible for which bills, you should close any joint accounts and transfer the balance to the appropriate party. Sometimes you can have the other person’s name removed from joint accounts without closing them entirely. Either way, make sure your finances are separated going forward.
3. Liquidate joint assets. Obviously this would mean selling the house. If you have negotiated an agreement about who will keep the house, make sure the mortgage is in the right person’s name, or both parties could be held liable in the event of foreclosure. If you have other material assets you’ve bought together, such as a boat, recreational vehicle, second home, investment property, etc., be sure to sell the assets or transfer ownership to the appropriate person.
4. Divide your money. This can be fairly straight-forward in the case of a joint savings account, but can get trickier when it comes to other investments, such as stocks or bonds. You can make trade-offs for investments that haven’t matured, but be sure that funds will be disbursed correctly.
5. Take out credit in your own name. Historically, it has been difficult for women to get a loan after a divorce because they were typically not primary wage-earners. Although times have changed, getting approved for credit on a single income is harder and more costly than taking out debt as a couple. You can and should seek credit in your own name soon after a divorce to establish a positive credit history and boost your credit score.

Divorce can be ugly, but you don’t want to carry that trauma forward into your financial future. Make sure you understand the basics about using credit wisely, and always monitor your credit report and score annually.

The end of any relationship can be turbulent, as emotions run high and can often take over our better selves. But ending a violent marriage can be outright dangerous, and is a big reason why victims of domestic violence stay in a relationship with their abusers for so long. It’s important to know that help is out there, and there is life beyond the abusive relationship.

1. Always put safety first. If your wellbeing is in jeopardy, or you fear for the safety of your children, it’s important to get out of the dangerous environment without risking additional harm. Contact your local domestic violence shelter to find out what services they can offer. You may be able to temporarily reside in a secret location while divorce proceedings are underway.
2. Talk to a lawyer. Divorce lawyers are skilled in the federal and state laws that protect victims of domestic abuse. There may be legal steps you can take to protect yourself while ending the relationship.
3. Develop a safety plan. Work with a social worker or counselor to develop a plan of action. Talk through all of the what-if scenarios that frighten and often paralyze domestic violence victims. Create a list of safe places and safe people that you can talk to about what’s going on. Evaluate your support network to determine what resources you might have available to you.
4. Gather your documents. If you plan to leave the family home and go to a domestic violence shelter, it is essential that you bring with you any documents you will need that support your case, even if you don’t plan on pressing charges. Be sure to also collect any financial records and other documents you will need in the divorce proceedings. Ask your lawyer to give you a list of things to look for.
5. Prepare your finances. If you have shared bank accounts and credit cards, your spouse could cut you off financially upon discovering you have left. Be sure to have cash on hand, even if you have to borrow from friends or family members in your support network. Be sure you can trust the people you’re counting on, and emphasize the importance of keeping the information confidential.
6. Pack up and leave. In many cases, domestic violence victims have to flee in a hurry and leave important things behind. If you can, be sure to gather all current medications for yourself and your children, if applicable. Pack some extra clothes and a first aid kit, and be sure to bring your most treasured personal items. This goes double for kids. A special blanket or stuffed animal will bring comfort in times of stress.

Leaving your spouse is never an easy decision. Remember that you don’t have to hate your abuser in order to leave the dangerous situation. Conflicted feelings are normal, and you should not be ashamed of loving your spouse. Just be sure you are safe and that your children are out of harm’s way.

By definition, divorce is devastating to families. It represents the end of the status quo and the beginning of a new, unknown future. For children this presents a high level of stress, just as parents are going through one of the worst times in their lives.

Protecting your children while you’re undergoing a divorce is no simple matter. Children’s needs vary by age, and no two situations are exactly the same. To protect your kids from the traumatizing effects of divorce, follow some basic rules and make sure the lines of communication are always open.

• Children, like all of us, fear the unknown. When parents separate, most kids don’t know what to expect. The difference with children is that they have wild imaginations, and will often make up the end of the story before they get all of the information. They might blame themselves, or think that one parent or the other doesn’t love them anymore. Be honest and direct with your kids about the situation, and calm their fears by offering comfort. Be age-appropriate with the information you share, and focus on the things that won’t change, like your love for them.
• Children rely on their parents for emotional cues. If you are showing signs of obvious distress, they will notice – even if they don’t say anything. Keep your emotions in balance during the divorce, and seek outlets with peers or a therapist for your own feelings of anger, fear, hostility, and sadness.
• The way parents interact affects the kids more than you might realize. Making a commitment to co-parenting during and after the divorce is one of the best things you can do for your children. It’s easy to devolve into arguments and laying blame on the other parent, especially when divorce proceedings are heating up your temper. Just remember that the other person is also your child’s parent, and letting them hear you bash them or complain about their actions isn’t helping your kids.
• Take the responsibility to put your kids first by making a co-parenting plan. Discuss with your ex the rules for bedtime, study habits, and disciplinary measures. It will help you present a unified front with the children, and will help them maintain a sense of stability.
• Limit the contact children have with divorce lawyers, custody evaluators, and other court related matters. Don’t discuss the details of financial matters and other information related to the divorce, except as needed to address their concerns.
• Agree to a parenting time schedule with your ex and stick to it. Maintaining a routine is especially important during this time.

Divorce is a very stressful time for everyone involved, and your children are going to be affected. The only thing you can do is limit the negative impact of the divorce on your kids, and be sure to seek professional help for your children if they don’t seem to be adjusting

No-fault divorce simply means that either party can sue for a divorce, and they don’t need to prove wrongdoing in order to be granted a divorce from their spouse. Prior to no-fault divorce laws, married people typically had to prove that the other person was responsible for the breakdown of the marriage, which made divorces more lengthy and painful than they are today.

Traditional grounds for fault in a divorce case included cruelty, adultery, desertion, imprisonment, and physical inability to engage in sex (provided that inability was not disclosed prior to marriage). Proving adultery and cruelty could be especially difficult, and forced many couples to stay together when only one of the parties didn’t want a divorce.

The need to blame one party or the other for dissolution of a marriage also led many couples to bend the rules of testimony in order to obtain a divorce. Unhappy couples would often stage an incident of adultery to establish grounds for divorce, and parties routinely lied under oath in order to obtain divorces. Out of fear that strict, fault-based divorce laws were making perjury widespread and rampant, California was the first state to adopt a no-fault divorce law in 1969.

With the introduction of no-fault divorce laws, which are now applicable in all 50 states with slight variations among them, either party to the marriage can initiate divorce proceedings without blaming the other party for violating the marriage contract. Instead of meeting legal criteria for the dissolution of marriage, a petitioner can now sue for divorce without blaming the other person for wrongdoing or having to prove that the failure of the marriage was the other person’s fault. It has greatly simplified divorce proceedings, and in many cases, reduced the cost of filing for divorce.

In most states, you can get a no-fault divorce by simply claiming irreconcilable differences. This is also known as incompatibility or irremediable breakdown of the marriage. There are no evidentiary hearings with a no-fault divorce, and divorce lawyers spend considerably less time preparing each case. The preparation time is usually spent in determining how the married couple’s property is to be divided, who will get custody of the children or how custody will be shared, and other particulars of the settlement.

Some states have mandatory separation periods for no-fault divorces, which tend to encourage couples to work out their difference whenever possible. The waiting periods can be frustrating, though, which leads many people to choose a fault divorce instead, where grounds can be easily proved.

The no-fault divorce tends to mean, especially in community property states, that the bad actions of one of the parties does not affect the equal distribution of property. Other issues of fault may be taken into consideration when determining child support or alimony.

For many couples, once the decision to divorce has been made, the final decree cannot come quick enough. Eager to be free from their marriage, many spouses look into the option of a quickie divorce, where the process is speeded up (often by using foreign court systems) meaning the marriage is dissolved more quickly than if they were to take the traditional route. If you and/or your spouse is or was in the armed forces, you should learn more about military divorce; most importantly, you should seek out a divorce lawyer who knows specifically about military divorce.

In many ways, the military divorce process is the same as the divorce process for non-military members, but there are some special factors that will affect the dissolution of marriage. Before you speak to a divorce attorney about your case, it will be helpful for you to have some familiarity with the terms and areas that should be addressed.

Some things you should know about before going to that first meeting with a divorce lawyer include the following:

• Jurisdictional issues are critical; some states are more flexible about residency requirements than others regarding the filing of divorce.
• Federal law, namely the Uniformed Services Former Spouses’ Protection Act (USFSPA), applies to divorces in which at least one of the spouses is or was a military member.
• Retired pay, disability pay, alimony, and child support are all subject to special rules.
• The so-called 20/20/20 rule applies to benefits: 20 years of marriage during which the military member served 20 years with an overlap of 20 years between the two.
• Separation bonuses may apply if the service member leaves before 20 years of active duty; depending on the jurisdiction, these may be considered marital property.
• The Service Members Civil Relief Act may grant court-appointed counsel and allow the delay of divorce proceedings.
• The military couple must consider the consequences of divorce on issues like housing, relocation, child care, education benefits, insurance, and other allowances granted by the armed forces while the couple is married.
• If one spouse is on active duty, the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Civil Relief Act is implicated and its due process provisions must be followed.

As you can see, going through a military divorce involves many unique legal issues, so be sure you find a divorce attorney who has handled such matters before and knows which laws will affect you.
